Our history

Remar SOS history starts from 2010

REMAR SOS was founded in 2010 as the crisis response arm of the Remar organisation. We respond to dire emergencies around the world, whether prompted by natural disaster or armed conflict, and provide humanitarian aid to meet basic needs.

Founded in 2010

In 2010, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake shook Haiti and transformed life in the country.

It was estimated as the most intense earthquake to occur in the area since 1770. A third of the population was severely affected– up to 3 million people– with approximately 200,000 dead and at high risk of diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, diarrhea and respiratory problems.

Remar assisted hundreds of victims offering food, medicine, clothing, setting up tents, and lighting generators. Remar Haiti has worked in the country since January 2005, providing social services to marginalized populations through children’s programs, a soup kitchen, and a safe home for minors. The safe home welcomes at-risk children and adolescents experiencing physical and psychological abuse, abandonment, or extreme poverty. This launched a new chapter for Remar as we ventured into humanitarian aid and disaster relief, which laid the groundwork for Remar SOS.

Earthquake in Equador in 2016

In 2016, an earthquake occurred in Ecuadorand rocked Manabi and the Esmeraldas, leaving thousands of homes destroyed and tens of thousands of people in desperate need. The international community mobilized immediately with rescue teams and basic material support. REMAR, in its delegation in the Republic of Ecuador, immediately activated the S.O.S. REMAR protocol which had developed for emergency situations. Already, it had been successfully implemented in response to catastrophes in Haiti, Colombia, and the refugee crisis. S.O.S. REMAR ECUADOR responded with its volunteers to the area to participate in rescue tasks and to provide food and clothing to the victims. A new tent was set up in Playita Mia in the town of Turqui in the same province of Manta, where mattresses and provisions were delivered to the affected people and meals were provided to more than 500 people every day.

Earthquake in Italy 2016

Remar Italy was at the forefront of disaster response after the 2016 earthquake in the country’s center. The SOS team mobilized quickly, sending vans with volunteers, food, blankets, and necessities to the areas affected by the earthquake.

The Municipality of Velino had a school where children stopped attending classes out of fear of new seismic movements in the area. They turned to SOS Remar for help. In December 2016, twenty secure containers were installed to hold classes for local children from several villages.

Floods in Peru 2017

In 2017, we responded to to severe flooding in Peru, establishing a base camp in the heart of the disaster zone. The crisis was prompted by a period of intense rainfall along the Andes and the northern coast, resulting in a tragedy that warranted global attention. Long-dormant ravines resumed water-flow, unleashing mudslides known locally as “huaycos” and destroying fields, animal breeding grounds, homes, roads, and disrupting the transit of people and goods.

According to official figures from the National Emergency Operations Center, nearly 100,000 people were directly affected with over 600,000 individuals and 134,000 homes impacted. The major cities of Lima, Piura, Trujillo, and Chiclayo, were all heavily impacted.

The region bearing the brunt of the crisis was La Cantuta, located 50 kilometers from Lima. REMAR operated a 2,000 square meter land in the area, where a base camp was established to swiftly provide critical aid. Hundreds of people who lost their homes and belongings received daily aid and support from the NGO’s personnel and volunteers. The central base contributed food, clothing, and mattresses to be distributed to those affected.
