Support of Local Camps After the Earthquake

article image

It’s been almost two years since the earthquakes that devastated much of southern Turkey. Two years of recovery, rebuilding and rehabilitation, and yet so much is still to be done. Still much of the people in Hatay, Turkey’s southern region, suffer daily the tragic results of the disaster. Thousands continue to live in container camps, like Remar’s own camp. And many live in conditions improper for healthy living.

Remar has been here on the ground for these two years. We’ve built a camp for the internally displaced people, provided them with medical care, clothes, hygiene and three hot meals a week.

It isn’t just the Turkish people who were affected. For over a decade Syrian refugees of war have been pouring into the country via Turkey’s southern border. They too lost so much during the earthquake, after already loosing so much to the Syrian civil war. Remar has not forgotten such people. We’ve been building bridges with the Syrian communities along the border, delivering aid such as clothes and food, as well as bringing a medical brigade to help many wounded by the war. Syrian slums still exist along the border, and we’ve brought them warm clothes to brace them for this winter.

The work in Turkey is far from over. The mental toll of both earthquake and war have left the Turkish and Syrian victims in need of a place to heal. People here need reassurance of stability. They need cleaner living conditions, proper health care, financial stability by getting jobs. Remar continues to strive to help all those still struggling, visiting camp after camp, family after family, person after person.

“We left Syria because of the war, I was afraid for the lives of my children, so Y we left and came here (Turkey). We have six daughtens and two boys. When we first came here we were living in a makeshift tent. The situation was terrible. Thank God, that when Remar SOS came to us, they saw how it was and brought us to live in a container. For this reasons we are very grateful to God, we are thankful to Remar SOS for the container and a good place to live. May God bless you guys so very much, and all your! Kids just as you have blessed us.

You showed up and shared in our suffering. We are grateful to God, for he sent us a baby girl. We pray that God will help us raise her up. I hope all my children grow up as those who will lack nothing. The children really have learned here a lot of things, like arts and crafts, reading and writing. They are even learning three or four languages, and many more things. It is a good thing too great for us. For all this we thank God.”

1000 days of war in Ukraine.

article image

The first days of the war are etched in everyone’s memory. 1,000 days of war.

Those were the cold days of February, during which we welcomed people fleeing the war from Ukraine at the border. Children and women, with fear in their eyes and uncertainty about what to do next, found refuge with us.

Our first stop was setting up a tent in the town of Mostyska, near the Polish border. There, we arranged beds for overnight stays and welcomed people who needed shelter for a few days or longer.

Soon after, the first tent was opened in Chernivtsi, where we fed over 1,000 people every day. At that time, cities in the western part of the country were overwhelmed with displaced people who had no homes and no way to settle into a new place. Medical assistance, food, clothing—we provided all the help we could.

As the days grew warmer, we moved to Lviv, the city with the largest number of war-affected displaced people. Our tent stood in a prominent location, making it impossible to miss. Hot meals distributed daily, humanitarian packages for families, and children’s days that allowed kids to experience childhood—this became our new reality.

When the weather turned colder, we headed to Rivne with plans to open a heating center in case of blackouts. Despite the cold and lack of electricity, we managed to build a large tent equipped with a dining area, a children’s zone, a medical department, and a coworking area. What seemed impossible became a reality, and to this day, hundreds of people can receive the help they need.

Next was the city of Irpin in Kyiv Oblast. After liberation, people began returning to their homes—worn out by the war but joyful to be back. The previously occupied city was heavily damaged, and people needed support in every possible way. A feeding place was a practical solution, addressing their need for food. Our work there hasn’t ended, and a large-scale project is soon to be launched in Kyiv, the capital.

With God’s help and the dedication of people involved in this work, our efforts never ceased but only expanded.

As of now, we are active in five cities across Ukraine, providing various forms of assistance, and we don’t plan to stop. The war continues, and so does our work, no matter what.

The recent tragedy in Valencia could not leave us indifferent. Today, we witness natural disasters and destruction that leave scars not only on buildings and streets but also in the hearts and lives of people.

The floods devastated infrastructure, forced thousands to leave their homes, and deprived them of basic necessities, including electricity and water. Currently, thousands remain homeless, with evacuees temporarily residing in shelters. This is horrifying and leads to the sobering realization that tragedies can happen to anyone, leaving innocent people to suffer, requiring care and support.

Our response to the flood was immediate and swift. In the first few days, our team was already on the streets of Valencia, providing much-needed assistance. No one was afraid of the mud – everyone worked tirelessly, cleaning streets, pumping out sludge, and clearing debris from damaged shops. We distributed tons of food, water, and hygiene supplies.

In a short time, we established operations in five towns: Catarroja, Sedaví, Aldaia, and Alfafar, where we delivered essential aid to those in need.

Disasters leave people feeling hopeless and helpless. The losses are immense, but this does not stop us from moving forward. For us, it is yet another reason to support those who are broken, help those left with nothing, and provide for those in need.

We plan to develop long-term projects that will expand the scope of assistance and address the current needs of this region.

Remar SOS In Turkey

article image

On February 6, 2023, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey, resulting in the collapse of approximately 300,000 buildings and the loss of over 50,000 lives. The Remar SOS team immediately directed its efforts to Turkey. Beginning from the second day of the earthquake in the Hatay region of Turkey, we launched operations with our mobile clinic, mobile kitchen, doctors, chefs, and other volunteers to aid those affected by the disaster.

A vast number of people lost their homes and had nowhere to seek refuge. Therefore, due to the emergency situation, we distributed tents, blankets, coats, food parcels, hygiene kits, and all specific necessities to those in need. Here are the details:

  • For six months, we served hot meals and bread to over 1000 earthquake victims at each meal from our mobile kitchen.
  • With our mobile clinic and doctors, we treated over 100 patients daily for six months.
  • Within the first two months, we distributed tents to over 200 families who lost their homes due to the earthquake, also assisting with tent setup alongside Remar SOS’s courageous volunteer teams.
  • Throughout the initial six months of the earthquake, we distributed over 240,000 food boxes and 50,000 hygiene kits to all regions of Hatay, Turkey.
  • Additionally, we distributed thousands of blankets, shoes, slippers, clothing, and coats.

Once everyone had tents, to provide them with a more comfortable living space, we began constructing a container city in collaboration with the municipality and the government.

We established 65 containers equipped with all necessary items such as air conditioning, sofas, beds, refrigerators, etc., for families temporarily displaced by the earthquake, container offices for those who lost their workplaces, an industrial kitchen for hot meal service, and a Cultural Center for children’s development and education. Within our camp:

  • We provide daily hot meals to over 300 earthquake victims.
  • In our Cultural Center, we offer daily educational activities and English and Spanish language courses for children residing in our container city and its vicinity.
  • We also provide separate English and Spanish courses for mothers and adults in our Cultural Center.
  • We continue to distribute hygiene kits, food boxes, and suitable clothing and shoes to all areas of Hatay.

We procure goods from small businesses affected by the earthquake and support them in their rebuilding efforts. In doing so, we not only aid these businesses but also support earthquake-affected families by purchasing products from them.

So we started the project “Rescuing You” opening our centres for refugees:

  • Siret, Milisaut, Oradea, Nadab in Romanial:
  • Przemysl, Rzeszow in Poland:

Sofia in Bulgaria:

  • Milano, Torino, Rome in Italy; Doren Voralberg in Austria; Zürich, Basel in Switzerland; Stuttgart, Augsburg, Frankfurt, Hamel in Germany;
  • Madrid, Alicante, Barcelona, Castellón, Valencia, Sevilla in Spain; Lisbon, Oporto in Portugal.

Hotel For Refugees

The nearest countries with which you can cross the border are still Romania and Poland, thats why we created the opportunity to rest in the hotel initially for 150 women with children and for elderly people. Now the need for intensive resettlement has decreased and we continue providing accommodation assistance to 30 people per month. Accommodation is accompanied by 3 meals a day, we also help people set up lost documents and receive medical treatment.

Missions In Ukraine

Lviv mission

  • 220m2 Tent size
  • 450+People every day
  • 140+Tones of humanitarian boxes delivered

Since the war in Ukraine began, our entity, have launched a series of actions in order to offer and facilitate humanitarian aid for the thousands of people who are being expelled of their cities. For our entity, addressing the humanitarian emergency is part of the mechanisms that we put into operation every time there is a humanitarian crisis due to an armed or environmental conflict. And it is that our position in Europe and mainly in the countries of the East of the continent favor and facilitate that help reaches those who need it most.

Currently, more than 3,000,000 people are being refugees in countries close to Ukraine, with the aggravating circumstance that the main aid posts in the country are being destroyed.

REMAR SOS team of volunteers is present in the critical points of greatest influx of people, from within Ukraine to their final destination point, either through Romania or Poland..

Tent

When a full-scale offensive began and many cities of Ukraine, especially in the north, were destroyed, people evacuated to the west of Ukraine, in turn, this region was overloaded with people, because in March, more than 4,000 people moved to Lviv at the same time.

We decided to help people to be able to get food every day, as many people were left without work or without homes and without access to food. It should also be noted that the prices of products have tripled since the spring.

So we fed people a full lunch that included soup, a second course, coffee and a treats every day.

When we established deeper relationships with people, we began to learn about people’s needs more deeply and acted individually. They helped in various spheres of personal life and also organized the distribution of humanitarian boxes every month.

Humanitarian Boxes Distribution

During the entire time of our work in Lviv, together with our volunteers, we distributed 140 tons of humanitarian aid, which included food and hygiene products.

Medical Care

We also directly conducted medical examinations with our doctors daily using a medical clinic on wheels. The portable clinic allowed patients to be examined in a modern interpretation of a ward in a car with all examination devices and accompanying medical equipment. As well as medical treatment.

Medical Aid

Nursing House

One of the programs that were created during our mission in Lviv was a home for the elderly. Built by two refugees from Kharkiv whose hosting elderly people. At the same time, 30+ elderly people including people with disabilities, are kept on the basis of the old hotel where the nursing home is located.

We provided different types of resources each week throughout the autumn period. These are cargoes

with humanitarian aid and ready meals. Also, soul and spiritual care, spending time together with the old women became no less valuable.

Rivne mission

  • 600m2 Tent size
  • 3000 People every week
  • 200+Hot meals everyday

Heating Center

On the eve of the onset of cold weather, we noticed another problem.

Due to the constant damage to the infrastructure in Ukraine, its resources were exhausted. The country could not provide all regions with uninterrupted electricity at the same time, mass blackouts began, people were left without heating, light, sometimes without the possibility to cook at home/charge gadgets, without communication.

We enlisted the support of the mayor of the city and built a tent of six hundred square meters with built-in wooden walls and a floor. We drew the tent into separate sections as needed:

  • Hub area Zone where people can rest, communicate with others. Charge their gadgets, watching movies.
  • Dining area Zone is designed for taking hot dishes during the lunch we provide and tea with sweet treats.
  • Co-working area Created to work with laptop or internet meetings.
  • Children’s section Zone of children’s entertainment, games and space for communication. For kids we creating a special programs during the week to support this little community.
  • Clinic This zone is intended for the first medical examination, determined by the specialist and medical treatment. You can also determine your sugar level & blood pressure here, or get recommendations for further treatment.
  • Wardrobe This area is intended for issuing clothes to those in need. We have a special days of giving clothes to people trough registration to be sure about real need & to solve it.

Chernivtsi mission

  • 1200m2 Tent size
  • 3 Meals each day
  • 2000+Portions each day
  • 400 Boxes of food every week
  • 500Tones of food delivered

Tent

Chernivtsi was the first Remar SOS spot in Ukraine. During we build the tent, we have already shared food with more than 300 refugees each day on the street the one want to cross the border with Romania, In March we opened a tent for sharing food, for sleep, for medical care, clothes and a play zone for kids. Chernivtsi is the first and still the biggest Remar Spot in Ukraine.

We have weekly programs with kids, women meetings and sport programs with refugees.

Mostyska mission

  • 600m2 Tent size
  • 3 Meals each day
  • 100 Families
  • 6 Month of support

Camp For Refuges

Mostyska is one of the nearest cities located near to Shegyny, a checkpoint through the state border of Ukraine on the border with Poland. Where queues for the passage of refugees sometimes lasted more than 3 days. Because of the long journey and waiting, people were exhausted, and some had physical disabilities, families with small children. We decided to build a tent where we could take care of 100 families at the same time. The families lived in a tent and received 3 meals a day.

Small missions

Chortkiv City

  • 1600 Bags of humanitarian aid

We had the great privilege of being useful in a town called Chortkiv. Massive forest Fire in Turkey!

article image

“It was a harrowing night as the relentless fire once again ravaged through Turkey. This isn’t our first encounter with such a catastrophic blaze, but its intensity and the challenges it presents remain daunting. The acrid taste of smoke lingers in my senses, a constant reminder of the inferno that engulfed the rugged landscape,” recounts Kerem, his voice brimming with urgency.

Belen, located merely an hour away from our base, triggered an immediate response from our team. One group together with @specchioditalia , @humanitarianprojects and @operationblessing swiftly rushed to the warehouse, gathering essential supplies of water and masks. Meanwhile, the other team, stationed three hours away, strategically positioned themselves to provide support on an additional front. Remarkably, the second group arrived with a vital resource: individual portions of nourishing kebabs to sustain the rescuers and individuals involved in the operation. It also served as sustenance for those fleeing the affected areas, desperate for nourishment amidst the chaos.

“The scale of devastation is staggering. Nearly an entire village was evacuated, and the once-thriving forest, a precious ecosystem, has been reduced to ashes, consuming a vast expanse of 250 hectares. Although the fire is currently under control, it took relentless efforts spanning over grueling 10 hours to tame its ferocity. Yet, the looming threat persists, as these destructive fires have the potential to reignite in other regions, such as Mersin, Mugla, and their surrounding territories,” Kerem reveals.

We have gained invaluable insights into optimizing our response tactics and recalibrating our actions. Armed with this hard-earned knowledge, we strive to become even more effective in our swift and efficient reactions to confront and mitigate the devastating impact of this natural catastrophe in the future.
